The quote originally attributed to the Roman playwright, Terence (c. 190-159 B.C.), says that charity begins at home. In a world that is made ever smaller by far-flung family members, the six degrees of separation, and by cultures and policies that reach into the most remote locations, home is the global village and our responsibility extends everywhere.

The Murthy Foundation was begun in response to 9/11; the day our world was changed forever. We support a number of organizations and causes in Maryland, in the United States, and in India. Since our founding, we have also experienced the devastation of the Tsunami and Katrina. As the 5th anniversary of 9/11 draws near, we encourage others to do their part in support of their communities - locally and globally.

Attorney Murthy is an ambassador for the United Way of Central Maryland and is serving a two-year term as co-chair of their Women's Leadership Council. She is involved with United Way International, with the goal of helping them to expand their operations in countries like India, encouraging businesses and individuals in developing countries to contribute to charities. Of particular note is the accountability of funds. Also important to many is the fact that donations are used primarily in the country where they originate, to help communities with needs ranging from basic housing and education to disaster relief. Contributors who are located in the United States are able to take advantage of the tax break granted to those giving to 501(c)(3) organizations. Plans have begun for United Way expansion into many other cities in countries where operations have started and into additional countries, as well.
