From Attorney Murthy :
One Year After 9/11
Posted
Sep 13, 2002
As the anniversary of one of the saddest days in our nation's history has
just passed, we should reserve special thoughts and prayers for those
individuals and families who were tragically affected by the attacks on
America on September 11, 2001. We extend our deepest sympathies to those who
lost their loved ones. Their lives are changed forever.
We are indeed a different nation after the events of that day. We need to
remember that it is because of certain fundamental values that we cherish
and must protect that we are such a great nation. Included in these values
are the civil liberties of all people here. America was founded on
principles of justice and liberty for everyone. We remain a nation of
immigrants, which is of vital importance to our character, diversity,
strength, and greatness. In our work, we try to make America a better place
by helping to bring into the country the best, brightest, and most
hardworking and deserving people from around the globe, to make this country
still better, still stronger. We seek to reunite families and to provide a
safe haven for those in need of protection. We are proud of our role and of
the roles played by our clients through their valuable contributions to
American life. We understand the fundamental difference between immigrants
and terrorists.
We have learned much from this experience. It has caused us to examine our
values, to appreciate those around us, to renew our patriotism, and to
debate difficult choices between freedom and security. We have had to deal
with fear, anger, and prejudice. In the end our country will emerge stronger
and more focused. We must each do our part in this process. As the President
said in a speech following the attacks one year ago, the terrorists can
shake the foundations of strong buildings, but they cannot shake the
foundations of this country.
