Grants for U.S. Worker Training
Posted Sep 11, 2000

As our readers are aware, the 1998 H1B law imposed a new fee of $500 for most H1B petitions, in addition to the regular INS filing fee of $110. The $500 fee is to be used for programs that provide training to U.S. workers and upgrade their skills. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has planned three rounds of grants -- meaning three opportunities for organizations to submit proposals for training programs to qualify for grants funded by the H1B fees.

The DOL has targeted certain key fields for the training programs. These include computer-related occupations such as programming, systems analysis, digital media and network design; as well as telecommunications; nursing; and a variety of other fields and industries.

DOL has announced the second round of grant applications, which are due on September 19, 2000. Complete information and instructions to apply and qualify for these grants are posted at www.doleta.gov.
