Germans Require Standard Passports for VWP Travel

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced that, as of May 1, 2006, citizens of Germany must have regular, official, or diplomatic German passports in order to use the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). German temporary or emergency passport holders will not be able to use the VWP to travel to the United States, beginning May 1, 2006. Machine-readable German passports will be required in order to take advantage of the VWP. A German citizen with a temporary or emergency passport will need a B-2 visitor's visa stamp from the U.S. consulate, prior to travel to the U.S. It will not be possible to bypass that requirement and use the expedited processing available to nationals of select countries under the VWP.

MurthyDotCom and MurthyBulletin readers who are not familiar with the VWP list of countries or who would like other details on the VWP Program will find many useful articles on the VWP on our website. [For example, see our June 17, 2005 article, CBP Reminder: Machine Readable Passports Required for VWP Travelers.]

This announcement only relates to German passports and does not alter their long-standing designation as a Visa Waiver country.
