Germans Require Standard Passports for VWP Travel

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced that, as of May 1, 2006, citizens of Germany must have regular, official, or diplomatic German passports in order to use the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). German temporary or emergency passport holders will not be able to use the VWP to travel to the United States, beginning May 1, 2006. Machine-readable German passports will be required in order to take advantage of the VWP. A German citizen with a temporary or emergency passport will need a B-2 visitor's visa stamp from the U.S. consulate, prior to travel to the U.S. It will not be possible to bypass that requirement and use the expedited processing available to nationals of select countries under the VWP.
