USCIS to Require Fingerprints from ASCs

The USCIS is terminating its existing contracts for fingerprinting of foreign nationals with Designated Law Enforcement Agencies (DLEA) as of October 1, 2004. Individuals in certain, more remote areas who would have gone to these DLEAs will now need to go to the nearest USCIS Application Support Center (ASC). The DLEA were, in some instances, more convenient than the ASCs, which may be relatively far from where some individuals reside.

The USCIS explained that the ASC fingerprints are now required to meet the latest biometric standards for security reasons. It is estimated that this change will affect approximately 25,000 persons per year who need to be fingerprinted. Over 1.8 million sets of fingerprints are already being taken by the ASCs each year. The fingerprinting notices provide the address where the person is expected to appear for fingerprinting and the date and time for the fingerprinting.
