One of the important benefits of U.S. citizenship is the right to vote in
federal, state, and municipal elections. With the presidential election less
than a month away, naturalized U.S. citizens are reminded of the need to
register in order to vote on November 4, 2008. Each state has different
requirements and deadlines. These details, and the links to the particular
state websites for more information, can be found in a
chart (PDF 78KB) compiled by the United States Election Assistance
Commission (EAC).

U.S. Citizens Only

The right to vote in the presidential election is reserved for U.S.
citizens. Individuals who are in any other immigration status, including
U.S. permanent resident or any temporary category, are not permitted to vote
and should not register or attempt to vote. For many naturalized U.S.
citizens, who may have only recently been sworn into that status, the right
to have a voice in the selection of the next leader of their adopted country
is an important one.

Some Deadlines Passed

The deadlines for registration in some states have already passed. In other
states, however, voter registration is still possible. If an individual is
eligible to vote, and wishes to do so, it is important to quickly check the
requirements and take appropriate action without delay. One who is already
registered does not need to do so again, but should be certain that
registration is current with regard to address, which determines one's
polling place and local decisions that may be included on the ballot.

Conclusion

U.S. citizens who have not voted in the past or who otherwise need to
register, should check the requirements and take immediate action. Until an
individual has complied with the applicable registration requirements,
s/he is not permitted to vote in this or any official governmental election.
