J-1 Waivers Possible for Some Specialists in Southern U.S.

The Delta Regional Authority (DRA) began accepting J-1 waiver applications for physicians with specialized training as of April 4, 2005. The DRA accepts J-1 two-year home residency requirement waiver applications for physicians in portions of Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee. Traditionally, J-1 waivers through work in underserved areas have been available primarily to internists, pediatricians, general / family practitioners, and psychiatrists. Slowly, more programs are accepting that specialists also may be needed in medically underserved areas. This is a favorable trend, in keeping with the specialized nature of modern medical practice and the needs of our aging population.
