USCIS Filing Fees Skyrocket from July 30, 2007

It is expected that the USCIS will publish a regulation on May 30, 2007 increasing its filing fees significantly. The new fees will be effective as of July 30, 2007. The Q and A provided by the USCIS states that the new fees will apply to all cases postmarked or filed on or after July 30, 2007.

The new fees are available, at the time of this writing in PDF format on the USCIS WebSite. The new fees are the end product of a regulation that was initially proposed on February 1, 2007. The proposed regulation was reported in our February 9, 2007 article, USCIS Proposes Significant Increase in Filing Fees, available on MurthyDotCom. The suggested increase generated over 3,900 comments. As a result, the final regulation reduced some of the proposed filing fee increases in limited types of cases. However, most cases will see an increase that is often two to three times the amount of the current filing fee.

Faster Processing Times Promised

The USCIS states that it expects the revenue generated to lead to a 20 percent reduction in processing times by the end of fiscal year 2009. They expect to cut processing times by the end of fiscal year 2008 on the four most common applications: I-90 (Application to Renew / Replace Green Card); I-140 (Immigrant Petition for Worker); I-485 (Application for Adjustment of Status) and N-400 (Application for Naturalization).
