| | Consulates Still Issuing Student Visas – Rumors Unfounded Posted Oct 12, 2001 Apparently there are news reports in India claiming that a 6-month ban on student visa issuance will be imposed at U.S. consulates. Please note that this information is NOT correct. An article in our October 5, 2001 MurthyBulletin entitled,
Foreign Students After September 11, 2001 mentions that a bill proposing a 6-month student visa moratorium was introduced in the U.S. Senate. However, as we always point out, there are many steps needed before a bill can become a law. The rumors may have started as a result of this Senate bill. The U.S. Consulate in Chennai, India, issued a statement assuring the public that it continues to process student visa applications exactly as it did prior to the September 11th incidents. There are also no changes in any other visa categories, whether immigrant (permanent) or nonimmigrant (temporary). Should the U.S. Department of State (DOS) mandate any changes, Chennai and all the other consulates will, of course, comply. As described in our article,
DOS on Visa Processing – Security Issues Paramount, which appeared in the September 28, 2001 MurthyBulletin, consulates have always had the option of requesting DOS guidance with regard to any visa application that raises potential national security concerns. You can be certain we will post any updates at MurthyDotCom. Of course the consulates have their own websites as well. © The Law Office of Sheela Murthy, P.C. | |
