INS Now Requiring New I-485 Form
Posted Sep 01, 2000

As we mentioned in an article in the July 7, 2000
MurthyBulletin, the INS has issued a new version of Form I-485, the application for adjustment of status. This form is used for the final stage of the permanent residency / "Green Card" process for persons applying within the U.S. The new form is described in detail in the July 7, 2000 article mentioned above.

We also indicated in that earlier article that the INS planned to continue accepting the old form until December 31, 2000. The INS has now announced instead that the old form can be used only until September 30, 2000, which is the end of the current INS fiscal year. The new I-485 application is available through our website or by calling the INS National Customer Service Center at 800-375-5283, or by visiting your local INS office.

William R. Yates, Deputy Executive Associate Commissioner, Immigration Service Division, Office of Field Operations at INS announced in an INS memorandum dated July 26, 2000 that INS offices should stop distributing the old form to the public.
