Salvadoran TPS Extended Posted Jul 12, 2002 On July 9, 2002 the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) decided to extend the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for El Salvador. The new expiration date is September 9, 2003. As explained in our March 18, 2001 article, TPS Program for Salvadoran Nationals (March 2001), TPS is a temporary measure to protect people who cannot return to their countries because of natural disaster, civil war, or other emergency. Persons who have been registered for TPS are protected against deportation / removal to their respective home countries and can obtain employment authorization. DOJ designates particular countries whose nationals are eligible for TPS. Generally TPS programs are authorized for one year and the DOJ then reviews the situation each year to decide whether to extend or end the program designation for the particular country.
