The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has issued its second issue of USCIS Today. The August 2005 Newsletter, in PDF format, includes a message from USCIS Counsel Robert Divine, who is currently leading the agency as its Acting Deputy Director. He will continue to lead the USCIS in this capacity until President Bush nominates, and the U.S. Senate confirms, a new Director for the USCIS. It is not yet clear when this may occur.

USCIS Leadership Conference

Acting Deputy Director Divine advised that approximately 150 USCIS directors, supervisors, and managers met for a leadership conference in July 2005. Leaders attending the conference discussed the Strategic Plan, solutions to various problems, and various approaches to decisions regarding strategy, policy, organization, and implementing new initiatives and programs. We at The Law Office of Sheela Murthy, P.C. trust and believe that such meetings will lead to more consistency among the service centers and district offices located throughout the U.S.

Backlog Reduction Continues
©MurthyDotCom
The USCIS backlogs apparently dipped below one million cases in June 2005. The USCIS continues to make efforts to decrease its case processing time below the six-month mark. This represents a reduction of more than five percent from the prior month. This backlog reduction effort at USCIS is not to be confused with the labor certification backlog processing by the U.S. Department of Labor. The reduction in processing times and elimination of backlogged cases would be a welcome relief to all who work with the immigration benefits system.

The USCIS goal to train its leadership and disseminate information via newsletters shows that the USCIS wants to make overall improvements to the system. It exemplifies vision and guidance on the part of its leaders and acknowledges that the system needs work. We at The Law Office of Sheela Murthy applaud these efforts!
