Judge Michael Chertoff has been officially confirmed as the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). He replaces former DHS Secretary Tom Ridge. We addressed Judge Chertoff's nomination in our January 21, 2005 MurthyBulletin article, Chertoff : New Nominee for DHS Secretary, available on MurthyDotCom.

It is unclear whether the new Secretary will bring any substantial changes to the three agencies that constitute DHS, dealing directly with immigration: the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), or the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP). No immediate changes are expected.
