Expect Delays at U.S. Consulates in China
Posted May 21, 2004

The Visa Information / Appointment call center for the U.S. consulates in China has been closed, due to certain actions on the part of the Chinese government. The consular posts will start taking walk-in appointments while the call center is unavailable. The walk-in procedures, effective May 17 to June 23, 2004, are available on the websites for the five consulates in China. The consulates are continuing to process those individuals with scheduled appointments that were set on or before April 23, 2004, prior to the closure of the call center, as well as those with medical or other humanitarian emergencies.

After the existing appointments have all been met, the consulates will take visa applications on a walk-in basis until further notice. Obviously, the lines may be quite long and the consulates may not be able to process all potential applicants who may appear on a particular day. Applicants should check the websites carefully, as the type of visa requested may determine the appropriate day and time to attempt applying for the visa.

Reports indicate that there are on-going discussions with the Chinese authorities regarding the re-opening of the call center. More information, including links to the other consulates, is available on the Beijing, China Consulate Website.
