President Bush Nominates New USCIS Director

President Bush announced on August 31, 2005, his intention to nominate Emilio T. Gonzalez to be the new Director of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Regular MurthyDotCom and MurthyBulletin readers will recall that the former director, Eduardo Aguirre, was appointed as the U.S. ambassador to Spain and Andorra. [See Director Aguirre to Leave USCIS, posted on MurthyDotCom April 22, 2005.] Since that time, USCIS Counsel Robert Divine has been holding the position of Acting Director.

Mr. Gonzalez is currently the Senior Managing Director of Global and Government Affairs for Tew Cardenas, LLP and was previously the Director of Western Hemisphere Affairs for the National Security Council. While in the U.S. Army, he served at the U.S. Embassies in El Salvador and Mexico and directed the Office of Special Assistants for the Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Southern Command. It appears from his resume that Mr. Gonzalez will bring a different background to the position than did Mr. Aguirre, who had a long history in business.

The nomination will have to be approved by the U.S. Senate before Mr. Gonzalez can assume the position. While most nominations are approved, this has not always been the case.
