The U.S. Consulates in Chennai, Calcutta, and New Delhi, India have changed a procedure in their nonimmigrant visa (NIV) appointment systems. This does not apply to the NIV system used at the U.S. Consulate in Mumbai, India. Information reached The Law Office of Sheela Murthy in mid-August 2005 that, at the three consular posts in India, effective immediately, it will not be possible to modify existing NIV appointments that have been scheduled online under the U.S. Department of State website procedures. The modification feature previously allowed persons with existing visa appointments at the consulate to reschedule the appointment online based on availability or a cancellation, etc. This system allowing one to freely reschedule a visa appointment has been terminated due to abuse.

One who needs to change a visa appointment will now need to cancel the earlier visa appointment and schedule it again. It will be necessary to reenter all of the required data.

In the announcement on this matter, the Embassy was kind enough to issue an apology for the inconvenience to visa applicants and noted that they are working diligently to resolve the matter.
