The USCIS recently issued a reminder to foreign nationals regarding the need
to file for travel documents well in advance to ensure the ability to travel
abroad before the holiday season. The winter season traditionally is a
high-travel season, in part because of the occurrence of several secular and religious observances
and the fact that schools and universities generally are on break at this
time. The desire to travel
translates to high demand for advance parole and other travel credentials.
Those who need advance parole or other documents for travel should make
arrangements well in advance.

Advance Parole

Advance Parole typically is used by one who has a pending I-485
Application for Adjustment of Status. An individual seeking to renew can request
it up to 120 days
before the date of expiration of an existing parole document.

Passports

It is necessary for a foreign national to have a valid passport to reenter
the U.S. Individuals whose passports have expired (or will expire) need to
check with their embassies to determine procedures and timelines to file for
renewals or the issuance of new passports.

Visas : U.S. and Transit

Many people, particularly nonimmigrant workers and their families, as well
as students and visitors, need valid visas to enter the United States. If one's visa
has expired, or if one has changed status in the U.S., it generally is necessary to obtain a new visa stamp from the consulate or embassy abroad.
This requires an appointment at the U.S. consulate in the appropriate
country. Since appointments are often booked early during heavy travel
seasons, it is best to research this matter well in advance.

Many long flights transit through third countries, including the U.S. Transit visas are often
required in such instances, as they are under
U.S. law. Well in advance of their journeys, travelers should check with the embassies of transit countries
through which they will pass to be sure they have all requisite documents at
the time of travel.
