Currently, the US-VISIT program operates on a two-fingerprint collection system. The entry component of the US-VISIT system is designed to increase security by verifying identity and checking background information at the Ports of Entry. As the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) continue to move forward in their efforts to make their security-check systems interoperable, US-VISIT will be moving to a ten-fingerprint collection system. This change is likely to occur sometime in 2008.

The DHS believes that this change will result in fewer individuals being sent to secondary inspection and increased accuracy in data gathering and security checks. In most instances, DHS tests new initiatives at a few ports of entry before implementing them at all ports. It is likely that this initiative will be similar.
