Traditionally, J-1 waivers through work in underserved areas have been available primarily to internists, pediatricians, general / family practitioners, and psychiatrists. Slowly, more programs are accepting that specialists also may be needed in medically underserved areas. This is a favorable trend, in keeping with the specialized nature of modern medical practice and the needs of our aging population.

No physician should assume that s/he will automatically be granted a J-1 waiver. It is necessary to carefully check the requirements of the particular program. For more information on J-1 waivers, see our Physician Page on MurthyDotCom.
