DOJ Bill Sent to President : Provisions Include H-1 Extensions
Posted Nov 01, 2002

We are pleased to inform our readers that the U.S. Department of Justice Authorization Bill was sent to the President on October 23, 2002. This Bill contains a more favorable "7th-year H1B Extension" provision than exists in current law. We expect that the bill will be signed into law shortly.

The October 18, 2002 MurthyBulletin reported that there was a delay in sending the bill to the President in our article DOJ Authorization Bill Delayed, available on MurthyDotCom. The holdup was due to the fact that Congress needed to make some technical corrections to the language in the Bill. Those corrections did not affect the sections relating to immigration.

For more information on the immigration aspects of the Bill, including provisions regarding H1B extensions, J-1 physician waivers, and immigrant investors, refer to these articles on our WebSite: Important New Legislation Pending, from the October 4, 2002 MurthyBulletin and Senate Passes Legislation Easing H1B Extensions, published October 11, 2002. The H1B extension language is especially helpful - allowing persons with labor certifications still pending after one year to extend the H-1 beyond six years.
