No Receipt Yet from VSC? Don't Panic!
Posted Jun 08, 2001

If you filed a case with the INS Vermont Service Center (VSC) over a month ago - in late April or May 2001 - and still have no INS-issued receipt, you are not alone. One of the paralegals at the Law Office of Sheela Murthy spoke with an officer at VSC on June 5, 2001 and was told that the mailroom is experiencing a large backlog. VSC is just now processing mail they received in mid-April 2001.

So if you are still waiting for your INS receipt, for example, in order to start working for a new employer under the October 2001 law referred to as the AC21 law, do not assume that your petition got lost or that the employer or attorney did not file the petition on time. For your peace of mind, if the package was sent by courier service, you can generally obtain confirmation of delivery directly from the carrier you used. This may provide some protection, should INS misplace the file, though it does not fully protect you if INS claims never to have received the package.
