Security Watch : Accuracy Not Required for FBI Database
Posted Mar 28, 2003

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has implemented a final rule stipulating that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is not required to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of incriminating information about an individual before loading it into the nation’s most comprehensive law enforcement database. This rule applies to the FBI's National Crime Information Center, Central Records System, and National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime. As regular readers of the MurthyBulletin and MurthyDotCom know, the FBI conducts security checks for the BCIS.

While the intent is to expedite the dissemination of information and increase security, these inaccuracies in their databases may needlessly delay the cases of persons who are legitimately seeking immigration benefits. Over time and with improved systems the instances of inaccuracies should decrease.
