For the next two weeks, athletes from around the world will be gathered in London for the 2012 Summer Olympic games. From the awesome spectacle and uplifting pageantry of the opening ceremonies, through the days of suspense and excitement as athletes compete for gold, the Olympics provide a compelling narrative and a welcome respite from all the bad news around the world. It’s not so much that the Olympics can – or should – make us forget these things, but that it provides an alternate vision of what the world can look like when we strive to be our best selves. In these challenging times, the optimistic, relentlessly upbeat message of the Olympics comes perhaps when we need it most.

Despite all the hype and commercialism surrounding the games, something pure and hopeful still manages to come through. The competition, for all its storied intensity, remains friendly, grounded in the Olympic ideals of mutual respect and genial rivalry on the playing field. The nationalism on display is a kinder, more temperate version, something akin to hometown spirit or family pride instead of real conflict.

It’s easy to be cynical, but there is more worth treasuring about an event that brings together representatives from virtually every nation on earth. It’s a reminder of the beautiful diversity of the people with whom we share this planet. We should remember this as we watch the athletes stream into the stadium for the opening ceremonies, smiling and waving, flags held high.
