Attack on U.S. Consulate in Libya Has Deadly Results

Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and colleagues of Ambassador John Christopher Stevens, Foreign Service Officer Sean Smith, and the two other U.S. Embassy staffers who were killed in an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Bengazi, Libya, on September 11, 2012. Ambassador Stevens was known in the United States and Libya as an experienced diplomat with a deep commitment to the peace and stability of a post-Gaddafi Libya. In a region that has suffered much in the past, it is imperative that the work of peace and democratization continue.
