Sheela Murthy Elected to Board of TiE DC

Murthy Law Firm founder and president, Sheela Murthy, has been elected to the Board of Directors of TiE DC. The Washington branch of TiE Global is an important part of this prestigious international network of entrepreneurs and C-level executives who have roots or business interests – or both – in the Indus region.

Murthy and seven other new board members were honored on December 12th at TiE DC’s 2012 Annual Gala, held at the Bethesda Country Club. The evening’s keynote speaker was internet pioneer Steve Case, co-founder and former CEO of America Online (AOL). Mr. Case spoke about highly skilled immigrants, and their indispensable role in entrepreneurship and innovation – an especially interesting topic for Murthy, as one of the nation’s leading immigration attorneys.

As a member of TiE DC’s board, Murthy will share her considerable business knowledge and expertise, as well as her talent for leadership and fundraising. She is an excellent fit for this organization because her business philosophy meshes perfectly with TiE’s mission: to promote entrepreneurship around the world, through networking, mentoring, and education. As a successful entrepreneur who has made philanthropy an integral part of her business plan, Murthy shares TiE’s view that wealth creation and giving back to the community are part of a virtuous cycle, one that spreads economic opportunity, wellbeing, and growth to every corner of society.

TiE – which stands for “The Indus Entrepreneurs” – was founded in 1992 by a group of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, corporate executives, and senior professionals, all with at least two things in common: they were highly successful, and shared a common heritage on the Indian subcontinent. Since then, TiE has grown into an international organization with more than 13,000 members, including 2,500 Charter Members, an elite circle to which Sheela Murthy belongs. Globally, TiE is spread across 61 chapters in 17 countries. In addition to more than two-dozen U.S. chapters, TiE has a presence in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Mauritius, Pakistan, Singapore, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.

What makes TiE important? Entrepreneurship is a key engine of U.S. economic growth, and Indian-American entrepreneurs are widely recognized as leading the charge. A recent Kauffman Foundation study found that Indian entrepreneurs rank first among immigrants who have founded companies here since 2006, in high-tech growth areas like bioscience, IT, telecom, and aerospace. [See Kauffman: Immigrant Entrepreneurship Slows Overall, Zooms Among Indians, MurthyBlog, 23.Oct.2012.] Many of these successful companies are either based in the Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia area, or have a substantial presence here. This is the vibrant business community that TiE DC represents, and we are proud that Sheela Murthy is now among its leaders!
