Murthy Law Firm Sponsors Global India Fund Benefit Gala
21 Mar 2013The Murthy Law Firm was a proud sponsor of the Global India Fund‘s 2013 benefit gala, which was held in Washington D.C., on March 2nd at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium. The evening’s theme, Invest in Girls, Invest in a Stronger Future, highlighted both the challenges facing girls and women in India – gender-based violence, unequal access to health care and education, early marriage, and other key issues – as well as the work of the global philanthropic community to find solutions to these problems, solutions that will help Indian girls and women to reach their full human potential.
The evening’s guest of honor was Ashley Judd, who is widely admired both for her acting talent and her unflagging humanitarian work that promotes gender equality, social justice, and public health around the world. As the GIF WebSite explains, Ms. Judd’s work on an AIDS documentary in India is part of what inspired the group’s formation in 2007. According to Dr. Amita N. Vyas, GIF’s founder and president, her organization is designed “to inspire global philanthropy and support innovative nonprofit organizations that are working tirelessly on the ground in India to improve health and save lives.”
These goals resonate strongly with the MurthyNAYAK Foundation, created by Sheela Murthy and Vasant Nayak. Their goal is to channel resources to programs – in the U.S. and in India – that empower women and children, promote education, health care access and good nutrition, and protect the dignity and human rights of immigrants to the U.S.
A few examples of the work of the MurthyNAYAK Foundation include: In India, promoting sustainable development through the Association for India’s Development; promoting science education in rural areas through the Agastya International Foundation, and providing nutritious meals for school children across India through Akshaya Patra. Here in Maryland, the MurthyNAYAK Foundation (MNF) supports ASHA for Women and the Multi-Ethnic Domestic Violence (MEDOVI) Project of the Women’s Law Center, both of which help victims of domestic abuse – especially among immigrant women who are particularly vulnerable. For the past several years, Murthy has chaired the board of the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, and provided regular financial contributions through the MNF, supporting the empowerment of girls and women in the Baltimore-Washington area.
We are delighted to team up with the Global India Fund, and share in their work to mobilize the Indian diaspora – and our friends around the world – to empower India’s girls and women, giving them equal opportunities to shape the future of Bharat Mata – mother India – and create a better society for everyone.
