Murthy Leads Panel Discussion at 2013 Women Spanning the Globe Event
09 Jul 2013Murthy Law Firm founder and president, Sheela Murthy, led a panel discussion at the World Trade Center Institute’s 7th Annual Women Spanning the Globe event. This one-day conference, for women leaders in international business, was held on June 12, 2113 at the American Visionary Arts Museum in Baltimore, Maryland.
As a highly successful entrepreneur and international businesswoman, Sheela Murthy was the ideal candidate to lead a lively panel discussion on Religious Beliefs / Cultural Norms for International Business – Unique Challenges for Women. With the wisdom that comes from personal experience, Murthy introduced a global perspective on the ways that religious beliefs and cultural norms influence how women are treated when they do business overseas.
The panel discussed strategies to help women succeed in international markets, even where cultural differences present unique obstacles for women. One key lesson: do your homework, and learn about the countries and cultures in which you will be doing business. Advanced preparation can yield great dividends, helping women to approach cultural differences with sensitivity, respect, and cross-cultural understanding – skills that play to the natural strengths of women.
As in past years, Murthy joined two other eminent women as moderators for the day’s events: Dr. Leslie Mancuso, President and CEO of Jhpiego, an international nonprofit health organization, affiliated with Johns Hopkins University, and Deborah Kielty, President and Executive Director of Baltimore’s World Trade Center Institute, an international business network that serves over 2000 clients in business, government, academia, and diplomatic circles.
The roster of panelists featured women leaders with world-class careers in business, government, and academia, such as Lajla Jakhelln, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Washington, Jeni Klugman, Director of Gender and Development for the World Bank, and Dr. Laura Richman, Vice President for Research and Development at MedImmune.
It was a day of learning, networking, and inspirational conversations, a chance for aspiring women business leaders to hear from the experts about how to work – and thrive – in a competitive global environment. As in years past, the Murthy Law Firm is proud to be a sponsor of this extraordinary event.
