MLF Among Top 50 Woman-Owned Businesses in Baltimore Area

Every year, the Baltimore Business Journal releases a highly anticipated list of the area’s top 50 woman-owned businesses. In 2013, the Murthy Law Firm made the cut again, as one of the area’s fifty largest woman-owned businesses. [See Largest Woman-Owned Businesses Based in the Baltimore Area, Baltimore Business Journal, Compiled by Carolyn M. Proctor, 05.Sep.2013.] Those who follow us on Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn heard it first, but here are the details of what it means to have made this list – for several years, now.

The Baltimore Business Journal surveyed more than 430 companies to arrive at this year’s rankings. Of this group, the top fifty represent a strikingly broad cross-section of the region’s economy, in industries ranging from petroleum distribution, construction, and commercial plumbing, through IT, engineering, and consulting, to catering, public relations, and staffing agencies. For all of the list’s economic diversity, the Murthy Law Firm was still the only woman-owned law firm to make the top fifty!

The woman-owned businesses in the BBJ Top Fifty account for an impressive amount of economic activity in the greater Baltimore area, and their annual revenue and employment figures show just how much they contribute to Maryland’s business and employment picture. Taken together, they account for hundreds of jobs, and hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.

An info-graphic following the BBJ Top Fifty provides context for these impressive achievements. [See She’s in Charge, Baltimore Business Journal, 05.Sep.2013.] Although the statistics clearly show that women – especially minority women – still face significant hurdles in the marketplace, it also shows that more and more women are succeeding in the top echelons of the business world. Moreover, the statistics demonstrate that, far from being anecdotal success stories, the contributions of these women entrepreneurs are part of a national trend that links women’s leadership with exceptional business growth. For example: according to BBJ, a 2010 study found that public companies with female CEOs outperformed their industries by 15 percent on the stock market, and their companies outperformed the overall market by 28 percent!

As a business that was built from scratch by an immigrant woman entrepreneur who overcame the odds, the Murthy Law Firm is proud to contribute to these positive national trends – and to the Maryland economy. We couldn’t be more pleased to be in such illustrious company, among the most accomplished woman entrepreneurs in our area!
