Members of Murthy Staff Perform Exhilarating Flamenco Dances

Washington D.C. was treated to a sumptuous visual feast earlier this month when dance company Furia Flamenca performed a thrilling concert – and two Murthy Law Firm employees were among the performers! Paralegal Amy Weishampel and receptionist Morgan Heyer are principal members of the company and participated in the concert, which was held at The Dance Place, a performance space located in the heart of the nation’s capital. Featuring dazzling costumes and live musicians, the concert, entitled Recordando La Alhambra, is one of many held by Furia Flamenca each year throughout the D.C. metro region.

Weishampel explains that the title of the concert encapsulates the spirit of flamenco and its many influences. “Recordando La Alhambra translates to ‘Remembering Alhambra.’ Alhambra is a centuries old castle in Southern Spain, but features a lot of Islamic influences in its architecture. Flamenco dance is also a product of cultural fusion, and originated by melding dance styles of Spain, North Africa, and the Middle East, as well as the Roma population throughout Europe.” Amy was invited to join Furia Flamenca nine years ago by its founder, Estela Velez, a well-known dancer and choreographer in the world of flamenco dance. Velez created the company in 2003, which has since performed in some of the most prestigious venues in the greater Washington D.C. region, including the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage and Terrace Theater, Lincoln Theatre, and the Baltimore Lyric Opera House. The company regularly develops new pieces that showcase traditional and more modern styles of flamenco dancing, and Weishampel, Heyer, and the rest of the company commit to rehearsing several times a week to perfect the choreography.

By melding influences from cultures around the world, flamenco dance has developed into an thrilling art form all its own. Furia Flamenca is sharing the rich heritage of flamenco dance with audiences throughout the region, thanks to a company of dancers who are passionate about their craft and its heritage.
