Meet the Murthy Law Firm: Anna Stepanova
03 Aug 2016The dedicated team of attorneys, paralegals, and support staff at the Murthy Law Firm is integral to our success. Day after day, they help to fulfill the dreams of our clients through their integrity, diligence, and commitment to excellence. To introduce our readers with the dozens of individuals who come together to make our clients and our firm successful, we periodically present one of our exceptional team members. This entry in our continuing series, Meet the Murthy Law Firm, shines the spotlight on firm Member and Assistant Managing Attorney, Anna Stepanova.
Anna grew up in Kaliningrad, Russia, which was then part of the Soviet Union, and from an early age, she was encouraged by her parents to pursue a well-rounded education. She focused on math, science, and computer programming courses, while mastering classical piano, reading great works of literature, and attending theater performances. Anna reflects that her parents’ enthusiasm towards learning affected her even as she reached adulthood. “I got the best education they could give, but they left me free to do what I wanted to do. It liberated me so much that I was looking for my passion, my thing to do, until my late 30s.”
Anna relocated to the United States with her husband shortly before the fall of the Soviet Union and settled in Iowa City, Iowa. She took a position as a designated school official (DSO) at the University of Iowa before leaving to attend law school. She credits her comprehensive education for her unique attitude in approaching complex cases. “[My education] has given me a very rich background, and I draw on this all the time in my legal work. Each case is like a puzzle, and you have to learn to recognize the deep structures that are embedded in each fact pattern. If you’re creative, you can solve it in the most elegant way.”
Anna eventually moved to the East Coast with her family to join the Murthy Law Firm, and is now an assistant managing attorney and member of the firm’s management team, while handling complex cases for individual and company clients. Many of Anna’s clients are in distress when they first contact our firm, and often have a very limited timeframe within which their immigration matters must be resolved. She thrives on these challenges. “When clients come to our department, they’ve usually had something bad happen, and they’re about to fly back home. Often they have their suitcases packed – literally – but they decide to make one more call, to give our firm a try and see if anything more can be done. We come up with a strategy to deal with their issues, and when it works, it’s overwhelmingly fulfilling!”
