After 25 Years, Sheela Murthy and the Murthy Law Firm Still Know Immigration Matters!

When the Law Office of Sheela Murthy opened as a solo practice in May of 1994, it was already years in the making. As a top performing law student in her native country of India, Sheela had visited the United States to compete in the Jessup International Moot Court competition in New York. The experience inspired her to return and pursue a Master of Laws (LL.M.) at the elite Harvard Law School. After earning her LL.M, she relocated to New York to practice corporate and real estate law at a prestigious firm in Manhattan. While she gained valuable experience there, Sheela was uninspired by the work.

The world of immigration law quickly proved a natural fit for Sheela, due in part to her own experience as an immigrant to the U.S. She realized that there had to be a better way – through sensitivity and good communication – to lead people through the lengthy and complex immigration process, and the idea of striking out on her own as a solo practitioner began to take shape. In May of 1994, she opened the Law Office of Sheela Murthy as a bare-bones solo practice based in her home. Her goal was simple but ambitious: to transform the world of immigration law by providing her clients with stellar representation and guidance while also treating them with compassion and understanding.

Sheela and her husband, Vasant Nayak, also had the novel idea of providing free legal information to the masses via the internet. In 1994, this was a revolutionary idea. Yet, it did not take long for MurthyDotCom to become the epicenter of the online immigrant community.

Twenty-five years later, Sheela’s practice has undergone an exponential evolution. Now known as the Murthy Law Firm, it is regarded as one of the preeminent legal immigration firms in the industry and employs more than 100 professionals, including highly skilled and experienced attorneys, paralegals, and a dedicated support staff. MurthyDotCom continues to provide a wealth of free immigration news, blogs, and updates to interested individuals, immigrants and potential immigrants all over the world, and to U.S. employers seeking foreign talent. Sheela and her staff have helped countless clients from all around the globe to achieve their own versions of the American dream.

As the Murthy Law Firm celebrates its 25th anniversary, Sheela and her team are honoring their past achievements while looking to the future. How does such a unique place plan for the next 25 years, and beyond? By continuing to build on the nurturing environment, family atmosphere, and commitment to excellence that Sheela dreamed of decades ago, when she first started taking on clients at her dining room table.
