Can I work for a non e-verified company in my first 12 months of OPT? If the same company becomes e-verified during my OPT duration, would I be eligible for OPT Extension?

Answer

The first 12 months of OPT does not require an e-verified company. It is the 17-month STEM extension that requires an e-verified company. So, if one has a qualifying STEM degree, s/he could apply for the extension if the employer becomes e-verified by the time the individual has to file for extension. Otherwise, it will be necessary to find a different, e-verified employer for the STEM extension. (09.Jun.2014)
