I was attending school in valid F-1 status until I incidentally dropped below the full course load, for which I did not obtain authorization from my DSO. …

… My DSO said that I had to apply for reinstatement and issued a new I-20 to file with my reinstatement application on Form I-539. My reinstatement application is now pending. My son who has been attending public school in F-2 status has to provide a new updated I-20 now in his own name to his school. Will I be able to obtain a new I-20 for my son?

Answer

Unfortunately, your DSO would not be able to generate a new I-20 for your dependents until USCIS approves your reinstatement application. This is because all functions, including those  to add or update dependents, are locked in SEVIS until the F-1 record is reactivated. (14.Nov.2014)
