Meet the Murthy Law Firm: Joel Yanovich

The dedicated team of attorneys, paralegals, and support staff at the Murthy Law Firm is integral to our success. Day after day, they help to fulfill the dreams of our clients through their integrity, diligence, and commitment to excellence. To introduce our readers to the dozens of individuals who come together to make our clients and our firm successful, we periodically present one of our exceptional team members. This entry in our continuing series, Meet the Murthy Law Firm, shines the spotlight on attorney Joel Yanovich.

As the son of immigrants from South America, Joel grew up in a bilingual household. But he also fully embraced American pop culture, including Stephen King novels, zombie movies, and Kung Fu television shows. He developed a lifelong love of animals, and as a child he dreamed of becoming a veterinarian, although he eventually realized that goal wouldn’t pan out. “My first job was working in a vet clinic as an animal handler. I helped hold down dogs for exams, cleaned up, and so on. That idea lasted into high school, when I took honors chemistry and AP biology, and realized I was no good at it.”

Joel recalibrated his career goals in college when he realized he was a skilled writer. “In college, I did a special program where all my core classes were intensive writing classes – even in the sciences. I also wrote for my college newspaper.” Joel eventually went on to pursue a career in law, earning a full scholarship to Loyola University Law School in Los Angeles. By the time he graduated, he knew that he wanted to practice immigration law.

After spending a few years working as an attorney for a boutique immigration law firm in Los Angeles, Joel moved to Maryland to join the Murthy Law Firm. Here, Joel spends a lot of time working with immigrant investors and those looking to open new businesses in the United States, and he is heavily involved in overseeing the legal content posted on MurthyDotCom. “I work on the MurthyBulletin, update web articles to keep them current, and come up with ideas for new articles.” The variety of challenges that Joel is able to take on at the Murthy Law Firm is one of the reasons he loves coming to work every day. “I get to work on a lot of different projects, and I have a lot of flexibility to pitch new ideas to Sheela Murthy and the management and operations teams here. They don’t have a top-down attitude; they actually listen and give you the opportunity to come up with creative solutions, which is a good thing, because there are some incredibly smart people here.”
