Sheela Murthy Honored with Woman Leader of the Year Award

Murthy Law Firm founder and president, Sheela Murthy, has just been recognized as “Woman Leader of the Year” for her many contributions in the fields of immigration law, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy. The award was presented by AmericanBazaar, an online news source, which focuses on the IndianAmerican community. Sheela was honored along with seven other trailblazing IndianAmerican women who are inspiring their communities.

At the Women Entrepreneurs and Leaders Gala held in Bethesda, Maryland, on November 16, 2018, Sheela proudly accepted her award and noted that her passion for immigration law was sparked in the early 1990’s, when she was applying for her own U.S. work visa. Disillusioned with the impersonal service from her immigration attorney, she vowed to launch her own firm – one that would fight for its clients and provide a wealth of information to the public, free of charge. Nearly 25 years later, the Murthy Law Firm is one of the largest immigration practices in the country, largely propelled by its comprehensive website, MurthyDotCom.

In her acceptance speech, Sheela noted how MurthyDotCom changed the legal immigration industry. “Those who have gone through the immigration journey have pretty much used the website as a valuable tool.” Reflecting on how her life experiences have helped her connect with clients, she explained, “I look at being a woman, being an immigrant, and a person of color as the three biggest attributes – rather than looking at them as three strikes against me. Looking at them as the three biggest attributes that helped make me unique and special and different. … life is not where you are and what you are, it’s what you think.”
