Online Filings Allowed for N-400 Applications for Naturalization

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) now allows most applicants for naturalization to file their N-400 forms online. Any applicant who is filing based on military service, filing from outside the United States, or requesting a waived or reduced filing fee is not eligible for online filing. Paper applications are still accepted for all applicants.

Process for Online Filing

An eligible applicant who wishes to file online must first create an online account with the USCIS. Through the online portal, the applicant can complete and submit the N-400, pay the filing and biometrics fees, track the case status, and respond to any requests for evidence.

An online applicant for naturalization is still allowed to have an attorney assist with the preparation and submission of the N-400 application form.

Conclusion

The USCIS has faced criticism in recent years for failing to make more forms available for completion and submission online. Hopefully, this is a sign that the USCIS will be making more forms available for online filing in the near future.
