Apply for EAD and Social Security Number Simultaneously

Form I-765, which is used to apply for an employment authorization document (EAD), now provides the option for the applicant to simultaneously apply for a Social Security number (SSN). In an announcement released on October 2, 2017, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) explains that it has entered into a new information-sharing partnership with the Social Security Administration (SSA) to allow for this streamlined process.

SSN Application Process

A SSN is primarily used to track an individual’s earning history in the United States and to help verify eligibility for certain benefits. Until recently, in order for a person with an EAD to obtain a SSN, the foreign national was required to appear in person at a local SSA office and present two qualifying forms of identification, along with evidence of work authorization, status, and age. But now, generally, no separate application will be needed if an EAD applicant needs a SSN. Rather, the I-765 application typically will suffice.

Conclusion

It is encouraging to see the USCIS and the SSA coordinate to streamline the SSN application process for EAD applicants. Hopefully, stakeholders will see more improved processes in the near future based on cooperative efforts between different government entities.
