U.S. Consulates in India Issuing Record Number of Student Visas

The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, India held Student Visa Day on June 19, 2014. A press release on the event notes that a record number of individuals have applied for student visas in India thus far in fiscal year (FY) 2014. In fact, the embassy had nearly 800 applicants on Student Visa Day alone. This news comes in the wake of increased efforts by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), encouraging foreign nationals to study in the United States, as reported in the MurthyDotCom NewsBrief, DHS Study-in-the-States Portal Helpful to Students (23.Jan.2014).

Substantial Increase in Student Visa Issuance

There are nearly 100,000 Indian citizens currently enrolled in U.S. schools. The desire and ability of Indian students to study in the United States is increasing, with the embassy reporting a record number of student visa applicants, and an overall increase in student visa issuance of 40 percent over FY13. This is a win-win for both the United States, which benefits from this increased diversity and the Indian nationals, who are able to study at some of the world’s finest institutions of higher learning.
