Applicants for U.S. Citizenship Required to Use New N-400, Effective 23.Dec.2016

On December 22, 2016, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is expected to issue a new version of the application for naturalization (form N-400). Beginning December 23, 2016, the USCIS will accept ONLY this new version of the form. Any previous version of the N-400 received by the USCIS on December 23rd or later will be rejected.

Increased Fee Also Required

December 23, 2016 also marks the date that the increased USCIS fees go into effect. As of this date, the filing for N-400 applications will be $640.

Conclusion

It is unusual for the USCIS to require that a new version of a form be used the day after its scheduled release. Nevertheless, those interested in filing based on the existing version of the N-400 must ensure that the application reaches the USCIS by no later than December 22, 2016.
