NewsFlash! F, M, and J Visa Issuance Resumes

The issues forcing a temporary unavailability of visas in the F, M, and J category have been resolved. The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) confirmed on November 21, 2011 that F, M, and J visa processing has resumed. Given the short duration of the inability of consulates and embassies to issue F, M, and J visas, it appears that there was no substantial disruption in travel created by this situation.

NewsFlash! Temporary Halt to F, M, and J Visa Issuance at Consulates

Posted 18.Nov.2011

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) issued an advisory on November 18, 2011 stating that the U.S. embassies and consulates are not able to issue visas in the F, M, and J categories at this time. This notification was sent to all users of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

The reason for this drastic measure is that the U.S. Department of State (DOS) has identified issues involving the exchange of information between the SEVIS system and the Consolidated Consular Database (CCD) used at the consulates and embassies. Efforts are ongoing to resolve these problems. However, no estimates were provided as to the anticipated duration of the suspension of F, M, and J visa issuance.

This inability to obtain F, M, and J visas at the U.S. consulates and embassies is important for those who have travel plans or who are currently abroad and in need an F, M, or J visa to enter the United States. It does not impact the ability to change status in the U.S. or to change or extend one’s student or exchange visitor program. Watch MurthyDotCom for prompt updates on this important matter.
