NewsFlash! H1B Cap Lottery Completed for FY 2020, Master’s Cap Reached

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced this evening that it has completed the randomized H1B cap lottery selection process. The USCIS also confirmed that, as expected, it received more than 20,000 petitions that qualified for the advanced-degree exemption (“master’s cap”).

The USCIS reported that 201,011 petitions were received this year, which is approximately six percent more than the number of petitions filed for last year’s lottery. The USCIS has not yet provided a breakdown of how many of these petitions were eligible for consideration under the master’s cap.

The USCIS conducted the lottery selection for the regular cap first. Petitions that qualified under the advanced-degree exemption that were not selected in the regular lottery were then included in the master’s cap lottery. All remaining petitions that went unselected eventually will be returned to the petitioners with their filing fees.
