Reminder: Qualifying Liberians Have Until Dec. 20th to Apply for Green Cards

In 2019, a defense appropriation bill was signed into law that contained a provision offering a path for certain qualifying Liberians to become lawful permanent residents. The deadline for Liberians to apply for relief under this Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness (LRIF) provision is December 20, 2020.

Background on LRIF

As discussed in the MurthyDotCom NewsBrief, Liberian Refugees Provided Path to Become LPRs (10.Feb.2020), there are approximately 4,000 Liberians living in the United States. Many of these individual fled Liberia due to a series of military coups and civil wars, which resulted in the country being decimated by extreme poverty.

Under the LRIF, any Liberian who has been continuously physically present in the United States since November 20, 2014, and who is otherwise not precluded from obtaining a green card, may file an application to register for permanent residence or adjust status (form I-485).

Conclusion

Again, the deadline to apply for LRIF relief is December 20, 2020. Instructions on how to apply are available on the LRIF page of the USCIS website.
