The U.S. Department of State (DOS) recently published a final rule in the Federal Register to raise fees charged by U.S. consulates for many categories of nonimmigrant visas. The cost for border crossing cards for citizens of Mexico is also going up. These fee increases will go into effect May 30, 2023.
Summary of Fee Increases
The scheduled fee increases are as follows:
- The application processing fee for non-petition-based nonimmigrant visas (except the E category) will increase from $160 to $185.
- The application processing fee for H, L, O, P, Q, and R category nonimmigrant visas will increase from $190 to $205.
- The application processing fee for E category nonimmigrant visas will increase from $205 to $315.
- The processing fee for border crossing cards for Mexican citizens aged 15 and over will increase from $160 to $185.
Conclusion
The increase in consular fees will lead to higher application costs for border crossing cards and several categories of nonimmigrant visas, effective May 30, 2023. If an applicant pays a visa fee prior to May 30, 2023, the individual will not be subject to the higher fee under this final rule.
