USCIS Expands Premium Processing to F, M, and J Change of Status Applications

Today, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced the expansion of premium processing service for foreign nationals seeking a change to F, M, or J nonimmigrant status.

The expansion of this premium processing service is being implemented in two phases. Beginning June 13, 2023, the USCIS will accept a request for premium processing service (form I-907) for anyone who has a pending application to change status (form I-539). The second phase will begin on June 26, 2023, at which point premium processing will be made available for all applications to change to F, M, or J status.

Note that, even after submitting a form I-907 with the requisite filing fee, the USCIS will not “upgrade” the case to premium processing until after the applicant has submitted his or her biometrics. Also, in the announcement, the USCIS clarifies that this expansion of premium processing service only applies to change-of-status applications; applications to extend M status will not be eligible.

The expansion of premium processing to F, M, and J change-of-status applications is a positive development for students and exchange visitors. It will allow them to obtain the necessary documentation and authorization to study or work in the United States more quickly and efficiently. We look forward to the USCIS continuing to expand the option of premium processing service to other categories and immigration benefits.
