NewsFlash! DOS Provides Small Expansion to Drop-Box Eligibility

Today, the U.S. Department of State (DOS) announced that it will temporarily relax one of the eligibility criteria for the interview waiver program at U.S. consulates, commonly referred to as the “drop box” option.

Under the normal rules, one of the qualifying criteria is that the prior visa in the same class must still be valid or must have expired within the last 12 months. Under the new, temporary rule, a person may qualify if the prior visa in the same class expired within the last 24 months. This modification of the interview waiver program will remain in place through December 31, 2020.

Note that all other criteria for the drop box option must still be met. A full list of the standard requirements may be found here.
