I have been in L1B status for nearly 5 years and am now being offered a managerial position. If I change to L1A status now, can I extend my L-1 status?

Answer

Ordinarily, a person can remain in L-1 status for a maximum of 5 years if working in an L1B (specialized knowledge) position, or 7 years if in an L1A (managerial or executive) position. If a person is moving from L1B to L1A status, in order to qualify for the additional two years of L-1 time, the change of status to L1A generally must be approved at least 6 months before reaching the 5-year L1B max.  (15.Apr.2021)
