More Details Released on Upcoming Domestic Visa Renewal Program

On November 28, 2023, the U.S. Department of State (DOS) held a briefing, which included some updated information on the upcoming pilot program for domestic visa renewals. Per the DOS, the program, which will allow certain foreign nationals to renew visa foils (commonly referred to as visa “stamps”) from within the United States, will commence as soon as sometime in December 2023.

Overview of the Pilot Program

Although we are still awaiting more details, based on the information that has been released so far, it appears the pilot program will initially be limited to H1B renewals. According to the briefing, the pilot program will start off with a limit of 20,000 visas to be issued between December 2023 and February 2024.

The limited size of the pilot program will allow the DOS to gather data and make any necessary changes to the program before expanding the program to a larger group. The complete details of the pilot program are expected to be released in the very near future.

Conclusion

Implementing a domestic visa renewal program is part of a larger effort by DOS to reduce the backlog and improve visa processing times at U.S. consular posts abroad. As noted, this will be the first time in some twenty years that the DOS has issued visas domestically. This program, in addition to other proposed initiatives, will hopefully ease the process for an individual to work, study, or live in the United States.
