Sheela Murthy is founder and president of the Murthy Law Firm, located in Baltimore County, Maryland. Her firm of approximately 85 professionals concentrates in the area of U.S. Immigration Law. Having completed her Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, Murthy has been admitted to practice as an attorney in New York, Maryland, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Before starting the Murthy Law Firm, then known as the Law Office of Sheela Murthy, she practiced with major law firms in New York and Baltimore.

Murthy is a member of several legal and professional organizations. She is active in the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). She has been on the Executive Committee of the Washington D.C. Chapter of AILA. Prior to this, she was chair of the Liaison Committee to the Department of Labor for Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. for the AILA D.C. Chapter. She continues to be a leader in the organization.

Murthy is regularly invited to present papers and speak on various complex immigration law issues before AILA and other national and international organizations, including the International Bar Association in London and the Center for International Legal Studies in Salzburg. She is a past member of the Board of Trustees (2002-2009) and, for a number of years, co-chaired the American Immigration Council (AIC)’s Annual Immigrant Achievement Awards event, which selects and recognizes outstanding immigrants who have made notable contributions to American life.

Frequently called upon to discuss immigration law in interviews with television network affiliates, she is also featured in many international publications for her worldwide practice. Murthy is a regularly featured writer, sharing information with her colleagues on consular matters and other immigration law topics.

Murthy often travels to meet with senior officials of U.S. consulates abroad as well as the different USCIS service centers in the U.S. to discuss policies and procedures. This enables us to better serve and advocate for our clients.

Murthy has been awarded the AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell. This prestigious award, the highest rating for lawyers, represents a measure of esteem for which attorneys strive. It recognizes Murthy for her outstanding legal abilities, acknowledged by her peers, and signifies that her professional ethics and conduct are above question. In 2006, the Murthy Law Firm was recognized, also, as one of the world’s leading U.S. immigration law firms by Chambers Global. In 2007, Murthy was honored by Who’s Who Legal as an internationally-recognized business / corporate immigration lawyer.

Notable among her many awards and recognitions, Murthy was a 2009 regional Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, was listed as one of the 40 Under 40 Emerging Business Leaders in July 2001 by Baltimore Magazine and one of the Top 25 lawyers in Baltimore-Washington by the Baltimore Business Journal in 1999. She serves on numerous boards, sharing her time and business acumen to strengthen area nonprofits and other organizations.

In the past, Murthy has been a member of the American Bar Association (ABA) and has served on the Immigration Law Coordinating Committee of the ABA (1999-2001). She has been active in the Maryland State Bar Association, the Law Practice Management Committee and the Technology Committee. She has also been on the Executive Committee of the Bar Association of Baltimore City (YLS) and is a Board Member Emeritus of the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland. From 2009-2014, Murthy served on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Central Maryland. She also is fluent in French and Hindi.
