Can my employer sponsor me for a green card while I am on OPT? Or, do I need to first obtain H1B status before the green card process can be started?

I filed my naturalization application a number of months ago and am now just waiting for my interview. My green card will expire in April. If my interview is not scheduled before then, do I have to renew my green card?

My H1B petition was filed using premium processing, and the USCIS website now shows that the case was denied. Will the employer / attorney receive an eMail notice explaining the reason for the denial?
